Demi
Not too many DJs can boast kicking off their career with an acclaimed summer residency in Bali, Indonesia and not long after playing alongside Danny Tenaglia in NY thanks to a number of personal invitations. But there is one who can and it is the self-described “santash-looking big haired guy” better known lovingly to all of us as Demi.
Self-effacing is the best description of Demi. This contagiously exuberant character has made an extraordinary impression on dancefloors the world over. His kindred spirit whose ear for a killer tune has spawned memorable sets and killer records and his diversity in his performance is both consistent and memorable, always striving to create the whole picture whether over a 2 or 8 hour set. Often found to maintain a steady tempo, Demi works a lot more with the internals of a track to make it ‘feel’ faster or slower. He dictates his sets with the ease of someone who was born to perform. This organic approach is never over-thought or planned out, but just oozes out of him very naturally and successfully. It is his humbleness and boundless energy which feeds off anybody who comes across this young man
“I’ve always had a very honest outlook in how I DJ. The simple successful element when you are performing is to play using your instincts and emotions – and if the people can see that and how much enjoyment you are getting from playing like that then you are half way there – the other half is buying your music, believing in it and always look to give yourself your own edge, your own mark.”
His much publicized spell-binding performances with Tenaglia in NYC, Miami and London, certain key gigs with Pete Tong and Laurent Garnier at Pacha, Ibiza and his beloved Deeper Substance residencies he held in London and in Toronto at Boa for a number of years earnt Demi two separate nominations for `Best Newcomer` and `Breakthrough DJ` at the 2004 DJ Pacha Awards and UK House Music Awards.
2005 and 2006 has seen Demi stepping up and pushing his irresistible grooves to the masses through his Deeper Substance events and label of the same name, as well as plenty of weekend jaunts to strange foreign lands. He is now in-demand globally from promoters and a host of the elite DJ’s requesting to have him perform alongside them Highlights have included his two recent sensational debut performances at the world reknowned Womb in Tokyo and Warung in Brasil where he just this past New Year’s Eve spent the night with Latin partygoers as they counted the seconds down.
When not flying solo Demi can be found consorting with close compadres Omid16B and Desyn Masiello under their group alias of SOS This uber-cool DJ alliance has been gaining momentum since the first event thrown in 2004. Friends drawing inspiration from their rich musical heritage, and direction from their beloved Deeper Substance and Sexonwax music labels, SOS was born of a desire to create synergy. The multifaceted rule of threes helps give balance to scores of compositions and also appears to apply in favour of SOS. 2006 marks SOS’s third season, a year when their first ‘SOS’ compilation mix CD will be released. They are sponsored by music industry fave’s Pioneer, and where they have shocked the globe with their highly acclaimed Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 that has been broadcasted to millions, back in March this year. Their now legendary Ibiza events at El Ayoun have become a firm fixture in the opening and closing weekends of the season and their efforts have been rewarded with a nomination as Best Newcomer in this year’s annual Ibiza DJ Awards.
The eyes of the world are now focused on SOS and their best is yet to come… In the current climate where a lot of promoters are booking DJ’s off the back of their CV as a studio producer, it is a credit to Demi and “that smile” that he continues to pack his schedule up with gigs all over the world.
